How to identify if we have cancer genes
Cancer is a disease where the cells in the body are growing out of control. This condition could be happened when abnormal genes defeated normal genes so the normal genes could not control the cells’ growth. Abnormal genes can be inherited from parents. When one or both parents carry abnormal genes in their cells, the genes will be copied into their children’s cells. It will make their children have higher risk of getting cancer. Cancer that is caused by inheriting of abnormal genes is called inherited cancer. The inherited cancer is inclined to be found earlier in life than the other cancer.
Characteristic of inherited cancer
It is not all cancer that run in families is inherited cancer, for example, mesothelioma cancer. Mesothelioma is a cancer that caused by asbestos exposure. So mesothelioma could be happened to one or two family members if they have been exposed to the same source of asbestos and this case is not inherited cancer. The characteristics of inherited cancer include:
- Rare cancer. The risk of inheriting rare cancer to the next generation is higher than common cancer.
- Early onset. If someone is getting cancer at younger ages, it is possible that he gets inherited cancer.
- One individual has more than one type of cancer. For instance, ovarian and breast cancer run together in woman who has family history of both cancer.
- Cancer in pairing organs. For example, cancer in both breasts or eyes.
- More than one case of early cancer in siblings. For example, two brothers get sarcoma at younger age.
What to check to decide the risk of inherited cancer
- The relation to the patient. Inherited cancer could happen because of abnormal genes hereditary. The closer you related to the patient, the bigger chance those abnormal genes were passing on to you.
- Family history. The risk of inherited cancer is bigger if there were more than one person from the same side of family had cancer. For example, the chance of cancer passing on to you is bigger if there are histories of cancer on a set of siblings from your mother.
- The type of cancer. Rare cancer in family history, even if only one case, would heighten the risk of inherited cancer.
- The number of cancer in one person. If you have sister who has both breast cancer and ovarian cancer, it is possible that you also are carrying the abnormal genes in your cells.
- The risk factors. If you have several relatives with the same type of cancer, check if they have something in common in the risk factors, probably the habits, the exposure to toxin or else.
- The age of patient. Inherited cancer often start at younger age. If you have a relative who has cancer at younger age, you better consult to your doctor whether you have cancer genes or not.
